Carnival Music in Trinidad: Experiencing Music, Expressing Culture by Shannon Dudley,

Carnival Music in Trinidad: Experiencing Music, Expressing Culture by Shannon Dudley,
Designed for undergraduates with little or no background in world music, Music in Trinidad is one of several volumes that can be used along with Thinking Musically, the main book in the Global Music Series, in any introductory world music or ethnomusicology course. Music in Trinidad explores how the history and culture of Trinidad is related to the expression and interpretation of Carnival music, the musical tradition most representative of Trinidadian culture. It looks at the genres of calypso, steelband, and soca and describes both their musical structure and their political and symbolic meanings in Trinidad's society. The book also examines how the instruments, sounds, and lyrics of Carnival music provide a sense of national and ethnic identity. Music in Trinidad includes many vivid accounts and illustrations of Carnival performances and is packaged with a 70-minute CD that includes examples of the various genres of Carnival music.

Music of Trinidad and Tobago - The Caribbean state of Trinidad and Tobago is best known as the homeland of calypso music, including 1950s stars Lord Kitchener and Mighty Sparrow. Other forms of music include Carnival songs like lavway and leggos, as well as bongo music (which originated at wakes).

Soca music - Soca is a dance music which is a mix of Trinidad's calypso and Indian music and rhythms, especially chutney music -- it is not, as is often said, a fusion of soul and calypso. It combines the melodic lilting sound of calypso with an insistent percussion.

Music of Aruba and the Netherlands Antilles - Aruba and the five main islands of the Netherlands Antilles are part of the Lesser Antilles island chain. Their music is a mixture of native, African and European elements, and is closely connected with trends from neighboring islands like Martinique, Trinidad and Guadeloupe, as well as the mainland former Dutch possession of Suriname, which has exported kaseko music to great success on the islands.

Music of Venezuela - Venezuelan pop music has been largely overshadowed on the international scene by its neighbors, especially Brazil, Trinidad and Colombia. It is known for its own salsa, merengue and other imported styles, as well as the distinct llanera music.
