Building Classic Small Craft by John Gardner, X
"Gardner's work has engaged and inspired more individuals connected with traditional small craft than will ever be counted."--"WoodenBoat "Ought to be considered the Bible on the subject."--"Cruising World As Associate Curator of Small Craft at Mystic Seaport Museum from 1969 to 1995, John Gardner sought out the best examples of classic wooden boats and then measured them, drew them, and researched their histories. "Building Classic Small Craft offers his meticulous plans and clear and complete instructions for building 47 beautiful, functional wooden boats for oar, motor, and sail, including dories, peapods, Sea Bright skiffs, wherries, Rangeley boats, and many others--a lifetime's worth of admirable projects that any amateur builder can tackle successfully. John Gardner was the acknowledged "dean of small craft," and "Building Classic Small Craft is an enduring expression of his philosophy, his knowledge, and his work. All the information you need to build these boats is here; no other plans are necessary. "Worth your attention whether you seriously fancy to build boats yourself or just enjoy reading about them."--"Sailing "Another must for the boatbuilder's library from John Gardner, "the authority on traditional small craft in America."--"Down East "Required reading for anyone who thinks of building a small boat.

Devlin's Boatbuilding: How to Build Any Boat the Stitch and Glue Way by Sam Devlin,
Few people have done more than Sam Devlin to popularize wooden boatbuilding. For the past 15 years he has been designing, building, and helping others build his fleet of small sail and power boats. Ranging in length from 7 to 40 feet--so graceful, pert, and purposeful they seem to have been born on the waves--these boats belie the fact that they are built from sheet plywood using wire stitches and epoxy glue. In other words, anyone can build them, and many have. A 1988 "WoodenBoat magazine profile of Devlin garnered more than 1,800 inquiries for his boat plans, an unbelievable response to any article in any magazine. Sailboats like Nancy's China (costs less to build than the reported cost of one place setting of Nancy Reagan's china) and powerboats like Surf Scoter are familiar, much-appreciated sights these days. Devlin developed this guide to building boats--his or any other designer's--from the building instructions he supplies with his plans. It is a mature, shop- and ocean-tested manual, covering everything from sharpening the tools to launching the finished boat. There is also a gallery of Devlin's designs and a detailed appendix listing sources for tools and other materials.

Ice boat - An Ice boat is a boat or purpose built framework similar in appearance to a sail boat but fitted with skis or runners (skates) and designed to run over ice instead of (liquid) water. Ice boats are small, usually only for one person.

Sail-plan - A sail-plan is a formal set of drawings, usually prepared by a naval architect. It shows the various combinations of sail proposed for a sailing ship.

Pump boat - A Pump Boat is an outrigger canoe powered by a small gasoline or diesel engine. Smaller pump boats might be powered by the sort of small single-cylinder engine which might be used to drive a water pump.

Cape Ann dory - The Cape Ann Dory is a variant of the beach dory or Swampscott dory, both of which are descendants of the Banks dory. Cape Ann dories were often fitted with a small leg of mutton or bowsprit rig sail, a short folding centerboard, and washboards (bits of deck that run along side the boat to keep the water out when heeling).
