The Sail and Steam Navy List: All the Ships of the Royal Navy, 1815-1889 David Lyon's highly regarded Sailing Navy List detailed every Royal Navy warship of the age of sail by era ship type and class. This book is the much-anticipated follow-up volume. It provides details of design and construction history, technical specifications, and fates for all warships of the important but poorly documented period between 1815 and 1889, which saw the introduction of steam power and the gradual replacement of sail. Extensively illustrated, the new work includes a representative collection of original plans from the little seen collection at the British National Maritime Museum In addition, appendixes cover captured, purchased and hired vessels, as well as Coast Guard and packet vessels for which the Royal Navy was responsible. Rif Winfield ably brought this volume to fruition after David Lyon's death in 2000 and their final collaboration is sure to be treasured by historians as well as modelers for its detailed data and diagrams.
Ship by David Macaulay, Today the small wooden ships called caravels would hardly be noticed in a port full of modern sailing vessels. But in their day, they were a technological triumph - the space shuttles of the fifteenth century. The creation of the caravel, a ship ideally suited to the uncertainties of coastal exploration and transatlantic travel, changed the map of the world forever. And yet there are no drawings or models from that time which tell us exactly what these ships looked like or how they were built. In Ship, we join a group of modern-day underwater archaeologists as they search for a long-lost caravel in the reefs of the Caribbean. The piece-by-piece recovery of maritime artifacts, along with their subsequent interpretation, is straightforwardly described through a combination of drawings, documents, maps, and diagrams. And as the clues to the past are pieced together, a story is revealed - of the triumphant birth of the ship Magdalena of Seville, and of its tragic final voyage a continent away. Although a work of fiction, Ship is based almost entirely on recent and continuing efforts of archaeologists and historians around the world. Caldecott Medal winner David Macaulay again demonstrates his rare skill in clearly presenting a wealth of historical and technological information through the immediacy of narrative. Accessible, fascinating, and mysterious, Ship explores boat building and maritime archaeology in an engaging and enlightening way.
Transport by sailing ship - Any ship is a total institution; a sailing ship on the open seas, being dependent on the winds, is especially isolated; in the age of sail, the technology of shipboard life and the lack of technology for communicating emergencies and of timely means of rescue made ships the probable epitome of the total-institution problem (with the most arguable alternative being space stations and outer-space exploration vehicles). German sailing ship Albert Leo Schlageter - The Albert Leo Schlageter, now the Portuguese Sagres II, is a three-masted tall ship launched on 30 October 1937 at Blohm & Voss in Hamburg for the German navy (Kriegsmarine) as a training vessel for cadets, sistership of the Gorch Fock, the Horst Wessel, and the Romanian training vessel Mircea. Another sister, Herbert Norkus, was not completed. Sailing ship accidents - Sailing ships were (and are) frequently put in the way of difficult conditions, whether by storm or combat, and the crew frequently called upon to cope with accidents, ranging from the parting of a single line to whole destruction of the rigging, and from running aground to fire.
